According to ANBA: Brazilian agribusiness exports to the Arab countries generated US$ 724.14 million in revenues in February, a 65.6% increase compared with the same month of last year, according to data disclosed this Monday (21st) by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply. President Yanukovich made a major policy statement on April 6 saying that he supports foreign ownership of Ukrainian agricultural land. For him the only criterion is that foreign and domestic agricultural land owners must use the land for agricultural purposes. If the government implements this policy it will go against the grain of national sentiment and certainly against the wishes of most Ukrainian land bureaucrats. The president also said yesterday that he is against export quotas of any kind but would support export duties as a way to ensure lower domestic prices and strengthen government revenues. In an interview on Deutsche Welle Mr. Oleh Niv'ievsky said that he believes that after the moratorium on agricultural land sales is lifted, Ukrainian land prices will probably be the cheapest there are globally. Ministry of Enviorment inspectors in Mykolaiv closed down Kernel's sunflower crushing plant in Mykolaiv for failing to meet environmental standards. Kernel acquired the Mykolaiv refinery, EKOTRANS, as part of its purchase last year of ALLSEEDS. There were no comments in the press or from the Mnistry regarding the nature of violations or possible future consequences. On Monday April 4 Astarta announced that it had taken control the Savinsky sugar refinery in Kharkiv Oblast. The former owner of the refinery UKRROS was recently purchased by Kernel, the vegetable oil processor. However UKRROS sold the refinery before the takeover. Astarta said its firs steps will be to modernize the refinery, and that refinery will add another 2,7 thousand tones of daily processing capacity. UKRO said that its shares in Kreativ Group increased in value from 5 Euro to 11,2 Euro per share. Kyiv Oblast Governor, Mr. Prysazhniuk, not to be confused with the Minister of Agriculture, announced that a group of investors with the support of Renaissance Capital will begin working the idle land in the radioactive contaminated area around Chernobyl.
